The Alpha Test Diary #4

A section dedicated to developer Q&As.

Hi everyone!

It’s been a long time since our last Alpha Test Diary. Today’s update is devoted to two topics: The preparation for the first public showing of the game at iGames Expo in Kiev and Gamescom in Cologne. Here’s a basic rundown of what’s been happening.

In the second half of July and the whole of August we were working on Version 0.12 and trying to stabilize the synchronisation between the server and the game client. We needed a stable version to show the game on a total of 13 computers to the public at the iGames Expo in Kiev. There was great excitement for this as it was the first public display of Survarium. It should be noted that it was a titanic effort by the programmers who spent the entire night before the show working hard to improve the game; as a result, in the early hours of August 16th, servers were loaded with Version 0.12a, which we used at the exhibition. At the same time we sent out another 1,000 test invites to the Russian speaking community which provide a decent number of players on the server. However, because of the “raw” V0.12a and frequent “out of sync” errors, many players experienced difficulty when trying to play the game. Due to this the developers stayed active and during the three days of the exhibition we made a lot of changes and fixes which would ultimately lead to a Version 0.12d. This allowed for most testers and trade show visitors to successfully play the game at iGames. Among other things, our goal with V0.12 was to provide players with an updated User Interface, a new location (School), anomalies, and different weather effects which we watched players react to with great interest.

The following week we departed for another event, this time Gamescom. In contrast to iGames, here we decided not to conduct a public showing but a private screening of the game exclusive to press and potential partners. In the business centre of Gamescom we rented a small meeting room, where we housed just two computers which we set up for presentations. We were really hoping that we would make a good impression with the game for both press and partners. Along with the preparation for the trip we continued working extremely hard on the game so we were able to bring Version 0.12e to Germany, which of course improved the performance of Survarium at the exhibition. In total we held more than 60 meetings and presentations. The was shown to almost all the major European, American and Asian gaming sites and publications, including; Gamestar, Polygon, PC Gamer, RockPaperShotgun, 4Gamer, Gamespot, IGN, PCGamesN, Level Magazine and many, many others.

At Gamescom we also had the chance to meet with a number of foreign publishers, distributors, advertising agencies and other potential partners. After visiting the exhibition and leaving a good impression we were inspired to do future work and departed for Kiev. Our immediate plans for now are as follows: further intensive work on the game and attending the Igromir convention in Moscow (The largest games convention in Russia). There will be many new things to come so stay tuned for news and updates!!!

Lastly, we would like to thank all the players who, despite numerous technical issues and bugs continued to support us with their activity on the servers and during exhibitions and trade shows.

Seems like the team had some tough times just getting to even show the game. Kudos to the developers for working hard to polish v0.12 up before/during the event.

A lot of great in-depth information there about how you guys are keeping busy developing the game. This thread and the archive of reviews that Joe posted in another thread are a great show of how committed you are to sharing with the community. I am patiently following the development of Survarium, any news of version 0.12g and further on is much appreciated.
I note there is a little more information on the wiki about the version log and English localization. Eagerly awaiting my opportunity to help and contribute with the Alpha testing when the International servers start going live.
Keep up the fantastic work!

The English localization is a very basic version they put in place so they could take it to Gamescom. I believe they're still working on the full translation.

Step by step, doing a full translation is always going to take a lot of time.
Hopefully by the time the next video developer's diary comes out we will be starting to see the first few Alpha testers of the International version.
